What do six conductors,  21 buglers and over 800 music fans have in common? They all gathered in Fick Auditorium on October 3rd to pay tribute to Bill Webb, a loved and respected band director in Edina for 25 years.

The audience sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed a magical musical tribute concert led by special guest emcee Stan Freese, former tuba player in the EHS Band and Director of Bands at Walt Disney World and Disneyland for the past 44 years.

Under the direction of Paul Kile, the Edina Concert Band opened the show with a musical montage of past Pops Concert shows presented under Webb’s direction during 1987 through 2010. The band followed with The Victors March, conducted by Bob Hallquist, Bill’s high school band director; Tribute, written and conducted by Travis J. Cross, a former Edina band director and now Director of Bands at UCLA; and Bright Side, a fanfare written especially for Bill by Dr. Timothy Mahr, St. Olaf Band Director and Conductor of Minnesota Symphonic Winds. In what was perhaps the highlight of the evening, Mr. Webb took the podium and, after a spectacular standing ovation, conducted Bugler’s Holiday, featuring 21 of his former teachers, students, Edina boosters, and Edina colleagues as trumpeters.

Bill opened the second half of the concert by conducting MSW in two sentimental selections, Yankee Doodling Overture and Out of the Darkness into the Light. Dr. Mahr then led MSW in the premiere performance of composer Carl Holmquist’s Emeritus, a piece commissioned by the Simon Family in appreciation of its talented band directors’ many years of service to the Edina High School music community. Dr. Mahr then conducted Tall Tales (Pecos Bill).

Special guest conductor Ed Melichar, Bill’s esteemed predecessor at EHS, ended the concert in the only way possible–with a rousing performance by Concert Band and MSW of ‘On the Mall,’ the traditional closer performed at every Edina Concert Band Pops concert.

The 21 trumpet players in Bugler’s Holiday include: Dave Rickheim, Mike Rickman, Nicholas Ellison, Preston Haining, Kay Hawley, Phil Holm, Mark Sutton, Andy Richter, Nora Tycast, Jonathan Grimsby, Michael Schnaus, Perek Lundquist, Amanda Smith, Paul Grangaard, Meriah Chamberlain, Jenny Woodbury Thompson, Bob Hallquist, Ron Hasselmann, Bob Ouren, Jim Richter, Pat Mulligan.
