Jazz Bands, Chamber Winds, Pit Orchestra, Solo/Ensembles, Music Listening Contest.
How do I know which band my child will be in?
All incoming 9th graders register for 9th grade band. Incoming 10th graders register for 10th grade band or may audition for Varsity Band. Incoming Juniors and Seniors may register for Symphonic band or audition for either Varsity Band or Concert Band. Auditions happen in early April and students will be placed based on musical skill, ensemble citizenship, instrumentation needs, and personal interests.
How does the marching band work?
All band students grades 10 - 12 combine together to form the Edina Hornet Marching Band. There is a camp in August where we learn the pregame and halftime show. It is a time when many new friendships are formed and lasting memories are created. During school, each class rehearses separately primarily on memorizing the music and then comes together in the evening once a week to work on the marching and performing. The marching band performs at the Edina home football games (as little as 2 and as many as 5) as well as the homecoming and State Fair parades. Every other year, students have the option of going with the marching band on a trip.
When is marching band?
Marching band begins two weeks before school starts in what we call SPAT Camp. SPAT Camp generally runs Monday through Friday from 9 am – 4 pm two weeks before school starts. Members of the Drumline have an additional camp prior to SPAT camp to work on the drum cadences and building the technique required to play marching percussion instruments.
When will my student get their marching band uniform?
Students new to marching band will receive their uniforms in August. Returning marching band students will be required to come and try on their uniform each season to ensure a perfect fit!
What is the best way to stay up to date with information about band?
Make sure you are receiving Band-O-Grams! Every week during the school year, the Band Department will send out a Band-O-Gram email that contains important upcoming dates, reminders, schedules, etc. Who should receive these Band-O-Grams? All students and at least one parent. If you aren’t receiving the Band-O-Gram, please email martha.lundquist@edinaschools.org to be added to our distribution list.
Also, check this website frequently.
I'd love to volunteer, how can I do this?
What is time commitment over the summer for my student?
Volunteers are always needed! Check your email, band-o-grams, this website and/or join the band boosters!
Our band program offers many enrichment summer programs through Edina Community Education that we recommend any family look into in order to continue the development of their student musician over the summer. As far as mandatory summer programming, all band students, grades 10-12, are required to participate in summer marching band camp. This camp usually takes place the thrid week of August, but will be announced to families and added to the band calendar each spring.
How can my student letter in band?
My student needs to be excused from a band event, what is the process for this?
Students must communicate any concerns or conflicts with marching band commitments with Mr. Richter ASAP either in writing or by email: andrew.richter@edinaschools.org. For any other band events, students need to communicate with their band teacher.
